Get Signed Copies of Ten Sleep & Bonus Stories!
The reviews are coming in and readers love Ten Sleep
Hi everyone!
Finally got some news to share with you about signed preorders for Ten Sleep! There’s a today-only 10% off deal too. So, jump on it! I’ve never done this before, so this is really cool and exciting. Also, the first two critical reviews have arrived! And, I have two big book events in San Luis Obispo and Fresno coming up May 1 & 3.
Ever since my last book was released, I’ve been asked, “How do I get a signed copy?” Now you can preorder signed copies of Ten Sleep! This exclusive from The Cove Books will also get you two bonus short stories! The Cove is also offering 10% off today only (April 28) with code TENSLEEP10. That means you can get a personalized book and those extra tales (one is about a prairie dog journey that you won’t want to miss!). There’s even a cool text area where you can put in your personalization request. Please preorder Ten Sleep, my life kinda depends on it!
The first two critical reviews have just come in for my monstery cattle drive tale in the high lonesome country! Library Journal calls Ten Sleep a “coming-of-age, visceral Weird Western marked by palpable terror and populated by uncanny creatures.” Sweet! (and very true). And Publishers Weekly says, “Belardes adroitly keeps readers guessing about whether his protagonists will survive their harrowing journey, while demonstrating a mastery of daylight terror. Matthew Lyons fans will be riveted.”

It’s always a bit frightening receiving critical reviews. Never know what the experts might say. And since I love Ten Sleep even more than The Deading, this makes me very happy. Ten Sleep is more complex, more ambitious, and I kinda love Greta, Think Tank, Scott, Tiller, the goat-fawn, and all the animals that inhabit the story. Watch for snoutytrunks too—definitely one of my favorite all-time side characters to write.
Oh yeah, you can also order signed copies of The Deading that The Cove Books has in limited stock. I haven’t signed a lot of these overall, so you’ll want to get one as a collector’s item, and maybe give away your other copy. I mean, that’s what I’d do! You can also preorder the trade paperback of The Deading, which are not signed. Makes for perfect gifts, especially with spooky season being year-round now.
I’ve got two big events coming up this week.
I’ll be at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on May 1 from 6:30-8 p.m. in Theater Room 180-101 in a book talk with Dr. Jose Navarro. We’ll be discussing, “Latino Horror in Precarious Times.” Topics will include: intersections of science and ethnicity, dual ethnicity in America, and we’ll wallow into ideas of eco-horror and ocean revenge. We might even talk a little about Greta’s journey in Ten Sleep. This is a free event.
On May 3, I’ll be at the San Joaquin Valley Book Fest at Fresno City College. Find me on stage two at 9 a.m. for a book discussion with none other than Jane Hawley. You might know her better as my awesome partner. She’s a graduate of the Texas State MFA Program in Fiction and is currently a District Librarian in the SLO Unified School District. Who better to be in a book talk with than my first reader of The Deading and Ten Sleep? We’ll discuss writing and selling, this golden age of horror, about nature and what’s at stake, climate change, climate fiction, and the ongoing climate crises affecting the central California coast. This free event requires registration through San Joaquin Valley Book Fest.
Quickly, what else is going on? I just turned in a draft of a new manuscript to my agent. There’s that. And I am starting a new novel. I probably should have started it yesterday.
Remember, you can get 10% off on Ten Sleep preorders (Today only: April 28) with promo code TENSLEEP10 through The Cove Books! Thank you in advance. I’m really hoping this book does even better than the last. None of this can only happen without your support.

Congratulations! I can only afford one book this time and I already ordered it from B&N. Or I’d buy lots and give away. Maybe later. But really exciting!
